Banach - an outstanding, unknown mathematician February 11, 2020

He is considered the third most outstanding Polish scientist after Copernicus and Maria Curie-Skłodowska. His discoveries are compared with the theories of Einstein and Newton. Mathematical solutions of Stefan Banach are the basis of today's digitization and are used, among others in car design, skyscraper construction, computer tomography, weather forecasting, traffic regulation on highways and solving puzzles of air disasters. 95% of mathematicians do not know about the impact of Banach's theory on the modern world! However, the students of Tarnowskie Góry schools, who today took part in the premiere screening of the film "Banach. Between spirit and matter ”.

The film tells about the life of Stefan Banach, his scientific discoveries and their impact on the work of scientists specializing in many fields of knowledge. The director of the picture is Wiesław Saniewski, one of the few filmmakers in the world who, apart from directing, also completed mathematical studies.

- Before directing I finished math, and as it was trivial for me, I also studied art history, art composition, and wrote reportages. I believe that my mathematical education meant that in 2015 I received a proposal to create a film about Banach - said the director before the screening. - I am satisfied that there is a mathematical genius in everyone, you just need to discover it. And this knowledge helps in many other areas of life and science, including making films - he added. 

The film premiere in Tarnowskie Góry was the fourth one - after Krakow, Wrocław and Chicago. Soon the film will be shown in Sweden. In the future it will be broadcast on television. 

Banach in Sweden

At the end of February 2020, in one of the Swedish cinemas in the city
Östervåla hosted a special screening of an hour-long documentary
Wiesław Saniewski Fri "Banach. Between spirit and matter ”.
The screening and discussion after the film were organized by an outstanding man who lived there
mathematician prof. Per Enflo, who plays the role in Saniewski's documentary
a guide to the achievements of Stefan Banach and his applications
discover through modern science and industry.
Per Enflo is a special character in this story about great Polish
a mathematician and a group of scientists from the Scottish Café in Lviv. He is
the last laureate of the prize of Lviv mathematicians from the Banach circle,
which he received in December 1972 thanks to the dissolution of the so-called problem
prof. Stanisław Mazur. The result of this success of the then young Swede
there were invitations and offers of cooperation from many of the leading American
Universities.
After the Swedish premiere of Wiesław Saniewski's film, Per Enflo wrote
to the authors of the document: "A film about Banach, shown on the big screen,
he made a great impression. There was a lot of enthusiasm after its screening
votes about the film itself, as well as scientific and educational
transmission. Loved the way the story was told: alive,
interesting, with beautiful photos and great music used ”.
Andres Wall, former president of the Volvo car factory, now, he wrote
Per Enflo - the financial guru of the Swedes, a well-known patron of the arts and donor
research immediately after the projection, he said: "It was great,
to remember! This movie needs to be shown widely throughout
world".
The professors of the KTH in Stockholm also took part in the discussion after the show
that is, the Swedish Royal Institute of Technology, also
appearing in the documentary by Saniewski - Claes Johnson and Johan
Jansson, who deals with digital functional analysis in spirit
Stefan Banach and Hugo Steinhaus.
At the end of the discussion, prof. Andres Vedin, scientist, one of the leaders
of the medical industry in Sweden, former head of Astra Gastrointestinal,
which introduced to the market, among others the world-famous drug losec,
stated: “It is not many times in our entire life that we participate in

an event at such a high artistic and scientific level. It was
just this time.
The film "Banach. Between spirit and matter ”, in which a guide through
the life of the great mathematician is our editorial colleague Mariusz Urbanek
(the author of the book about the Lviv school of mathematics "Genius"), he had his
foreign premiere at the American Festival of Polish Films in
Chicago in November 2019. In Poland, it was shown at shows
closed in Kraków, Wrocław and Upper Silesia. Before him
also screenings in Warsaw, in Lublin, where the only living,
Cousin of Stefan Banach in Poland, and in Lviv.
Saniewski's documentary project was born in 2015; realized
he was in Poland, the United States and Ukraine in 2018-2019.
The producer was Telewizja Polska. The official release date of the movie is not
still known.
